about

Daring, adventurous piano playing is the trademark of the Belgian pianist Stephane Ginsburgh. In this programme, he juxtaposes Robert Schumann’s Waldszenen – nine short piano pieces that romantically describe woodland life - with two more recent works. One is the final movement of the Piano Sonata No. 2 (known as the Concord Sonata) by the American modernist Charles Ives, an atmospheric homage to the natural philosopher Henry David Thoreau.

The other is Artificial Environment No. 8, a contemporary piece by the British composer Joanna Bailie. Piano tones are combined with a recording of a person walking up and down the tourist queue for the Notre-Dame de Paris (before the fire). A mishmash of languages creates a modern-day Babel in stark contrast to Schumann’s woodland scenes.
